It is a mind field out there when trying to lose weight or eat more healthy foods.  However here are my top foods to avoid if you want to trim down or lose some weight.

  • Processed baked foods.  These include doughnuts, cakes and muffins.  They are packed full of sugar and will leave you feeling bloated and lethargic if you eat too many. Remember sugar turns to fat.
  • Fizzy drinks.  Avoid these are they are packed with sugar and even the ‘diet’ versions are full of additives which can cause other problems. Try to drink more water, at least 2/3 litres per day.
  • Sugary cereals.  You may think these are the healthy option but read the packet. Many of the popular cereals are packed with sugar. They will give a you quick sugar rush and then leave you feeling bloated and lethargic. Opt for the ones with less sugar in or even better avoid them and eat a high protein breakfast, with eggs or fish.
  • Margarine. Yes avoid margarine as they are usually full of ‘trans’ fats, which are worse for you than saturated fats. Use butter and less of it.
  • Bacon. There may only be a a small amount of calories in a strip of bacon but it is high in fat.  Always grill if you must eat it or why not use less and crumble over some healthy scrambled egg?
  • Frozen dinners. Always check the back of the packet and most frozen and processed foods are loaded with sugar and salt, unless they state otherwise. Apart from increasing your weight, eating too much salt and sugar can increase the risk heart problems.
  • Alcohol. Never underestimate how many calories there are in most alcoholic drinks.  Even you consider you are a moderate drinker, watch what you are drinking.  Gin/vodka and tonic, prossecco, champagne and light beers, are the better options. Also beware of the mixer you are using, as they can sometimes can be worse for you than the alcoholic drink itself.
