I have been doing a bit of research into intermittent fasting lately and actually starting on a fast this week.  There are many ways to lose weight and recently this method has become popular.  Fasting for short periods helps people eat fewer calories and helps optimize some hormones related to weight control. This is also a great way to reduce stomach bloating, which so many of us complain about.

The popular methods used are:

The 16/8 method: Wake up from fasting during your sleep, then skip breakfast  and eat during an 8 hour window, such as 12 noon to 8pm

Eat stop eat: Why not try one or two 24 hour fasts each week.  I sometimes use this method –  Have a healthy breakfast today and then fast until breakfast tomorrow morning.

The 5:2 diet: Only eat 500-600 calories on 2 days of the week but eat normally the other 5 days.

As long as you do not compensate by eating much more during the non fasting days then this is a reliable way to lose weight and particularly around the mid region, which is big issue for a lot of us.

Short term fasting leads to several changes in the body that make fat burning easier. This includes reducing insulin, increased growth hormone  and a boost in metabolism. One of the worst side affects of dieting, is that the body tends to burn muscle as well as fat. However studies have shown that intermittent fasting is beneficial for holding on to muscle while losing body fat. You will need some will power, but there are various options available to suit you.

You should also seek medical advice if you have any serious health issues before trying this.  However if you would like any advice or information on this form of fasting feel free to message me or see me in classes.
