Christmas is the season of good will, and when we typically spend time with those we love. However Christmas can also be one of the most stressful times of the year. I have put together some tips that might just help reduce your stress this Christmas:
Plan Ahead: If you are hosting on Xmas day then plan ahead as much as possible. Don’t do it all on your own, delegate where possible. In the build up to the day make sure you also plan some ‘ me’ time. Have a relaxing bath, burn some oils and relax if only for an hour or so. the calmer you are the less likely you are to make mistakes and keep a clear head.
Focus on what matters: Christmas shouldnt be all about presents, but if you are under financial pressure it can be very easy to lose sight of that. Perhaps you could lower the stress by agreeing a budget for gifts or if you are good with your hands why not make some gifts or bake something?
Avoid family conflict: If you know there are likely to be conflicts, prepare some responses that might calm the situation down in your head. Count to ten when you feel you might lose your temper, take a few deep breaths and think before you speak. There will be another opportunity to air your views and by then tempers may not be so high.
Try not to binge on food or alcohol: Over indulgence seems to go hand in hand at Christmas time. You can lessen the impact by trying to eat healthy meals on the run up to to Xmas. If you know one day you have been very naughty, don’t panic or beat yourself up. Follow the next day with a healthier selection of food and reduce the booze. Remember alcohol also intensifies emotions, which can impact on relationships especially at this time of year. Also we all know after a boozy night out we get the munchies, so try to alternate with a glass of water and have some healthier nibbles on hand.
Make time for some exercise: Exercise not only helps keep us healthy, it can keep weight under control and reduce stress. So depending on your preference of exercise, put some time aside to perhaps, take a brisk walk, go to the gym, or do some exercise videos at home. It is very surprising how much better you will feel after an hour of moderate exercise.
I hope you all have a stress free Christmas this year, and try to remember what is important….
