Recent research has suggested that supplementing vitamin D in our diets could help prevent millions of cold and flu cases. I am sure this particular research will continue so I will be watching out for more information on this one. Perhaps one day we will a prevention rather than a cure for these annoying viruses!
What i have learnt from reading and watching various TV shows recently is that we may not be getting as much vitamin D as we need. Apparently there is an increase in rickets which was thought of as a condition from the last century! This is when the bones become weak and soft and can lead to deformities. We need vitamin D to help us absorb calcium and phosphate from our diet, these minerals are important for healthy bones, teeth and muscles. Most people can make enough vitamin D from going out in the sun for short periods. However during the winter months the sunlight doesnt contain enough UVB radiation for out skins to make vitamin D. The other issue is the use of sun protection, which we are told to use to prevent skin damage and skin cancer, can prevent our skin absorbing enough to have a positive impact. You should ensure you are getting enough vitamin d and calcium from foods which include, oily fish, red meat and eggs. Some cereals also have been fortified with this particular vitamin, so it is worth checking the labels. Although scientists and doctors these days dont seem to promote vitamin supplements, as a balanced diet should be sufficient, it does seems most of them are agree that some of us during the winter months in particular, would benefit from taking vitamin D supplements. If you do choose to take a supplement 10mcg per day will be enough for most people. Of course there are a group of people who on medical grounds cannot take a vitamin D supplement, so you should always consult your doctor. I take Vitamin D and calcium daily, especially during the Winter months when there is less sunshine.
