Most of us lead very busy lives and it is all to easy to say ‘I don’t have time to exercise’, but we need to make time for exercise. Recommendations are, we should be doing at least 150 mins moderate aerobic exercise each week or 75 minutes vigorous exercise per week.

Here are just some of the benefits of exercise on your mental and physical health:

  • Reduces body fat. Remember the more muscle you have, the more calories you will burn
  • Keeps bones strong. Try some weight bearing or resistance training in your weekly exercise
  • Lowers anxiety and stress. Exercise releases ‘feel good’ hormones which can improve low to moderate depression and anxiety
  • Reduces the risk of arthritis. Include some stretching and flexibility training as we do in yoga.
  • Lowers the risk of dementia. Dance exercise in particular keeps your brain and memory working. The act of remembering and performing a sequence of steps can really keep your mind keep young and delay the signs of aging
  • Improves sex life. Keeping your muscles active helps produce more hormones. You are also likely to feel more fit and better about yourself and this may increase your interest in sex
  • Reduces blood pressure. Exercise can help you reduce blood pressure which decreases the risk of heart disease, strokes and kidney disease to name a few.
  • Brings about better sleep. Although experts recommend you do not exercise right before bedtime, exercise during the day/eve really can help you sleep. In particular a yoga class can help your mind and body wind down and prepare you for a good nights sleep.

Just some of the reasons you really should try to make exercise a part of your weekly plan.  Take a look at my class timetable and feel free to start this week…
